Why not gift them something which is customised, which explains the significance of the marital bond, and which can also be displayed in the couple’s home. We would advise to purchase a present that has anayat from the Glorious Quran written in calligraphy and framed.

Marriage is, as is too well known, the most important event in a human’s journey on earth – a mixed bundle that consists of contrasting yet complementary elements such as duties and privileges, smiles and tears, responsibilities and benefits. It requires one to put effort and sacrifice in order to increase love and happiness.

Allah, the Most Merciful, says in the 21stayat of Surah Al Room: “And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”

Allah’s help comes to the husband and the wife in the form of mercy and affection that he places in their hearts for each. As gratitude for this favour of Allah, it is thus now the responsibility of both the man and the woman to give each other affection and compassion that Allah has given them. Or else, it would not be easy to find peace in marriage.

In verse 187 of Surah Al Baqarah, Allah says, “They (your wives) are a garment for you and you are a garment for them.”The use of garment as a metaphor for spouse can be explained thus:

  1. Just as there is barely any distance between the body and the garment, the husband and wife should also be close to each other so that they are able to exchange their deepest secrets comfortably and with full trust in one another.
  2. Just as a garment shields us from dirt and extreme climate, so should a husband and wife protect one other from foes.
  3. Just as a garment is a layer over our bodies, covering our shameful parts and injuries/marks, a man and woman should cover each other’s faults. They should protect each other’s dignity by not broadcasting each other’s weaknesses to the world.
  4. Just as a garment adds grace to our physical appearance, a husband and wife should add grace to each other’s personalities.

It is thus quite amply clear, that the verses of the Glorious Quran establish the significance of marriage. A framed calligraphy of a marriage-specific Quranic verse would be a good Muslim marriage anniversary gift. You are likely to find many such online Islamic wedding anniversary gifts.
